What does “black tie” mean?

Black tie is the most formal evening dress code. Here’s a simple guide for the Banquet Gala:

Gentlemen
A tuxedo (black or midnight-blue dinner jacket with matching trousers), a white dress shirt, a black bow tie and black dress shoes.
Ladies
A floor-length evening gown, or an elegant formal cocktail dress or dressy separates.
Young guests
Boys in a suit or tuxedo with a tie or bow tie; girls in a formal or party dress.
